The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites outstanding PhD candidates to apply for NUS Research Scholarships available in AY2023/24 to pursue a full-time doctoral degree at NUS. The scholarships are for in the mid-year January 2024 intake, with an application deadline in mid-May 2023 (outcomes announced October 2023). Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, include a monthly stipend plus full tuition fees for up to four years for PhD candidates. Prospective students of all nationalities are eligible to apply.

The Department of Geography at NUS is frequently ranked among the top Geography departments in the world, and the number one in Asia. As a top ranked Geography department in a leading global university, Geography faculty and graduate students collaborate on a wide-range of research projects that advance knowledge and its application, have high impact and are internationally respected for their quality.

Prospective candidates are advised to directly approach a member of faculty researching in your area of interest to act as an advisor, or to contact the Graduate Studies Coordinator, Professor Paul Kench, for more general inquiries. The list of faculty members and their research interests are  accessible at: https://fass.nus.edu.sg/geog/faculty/

Research in the Department is clustered into three intersecting groups: Politics, Economies And Space (PEAS); Social and Cultural Geographies (SCG); and Tropical Environmental Change (TEC). More information on the research activities within these groupings – and research in general in the Department – is available via the departmental Research webpage: https://fass.nus.edu.sg/geog/. The boundaries between the research groupings are neither fixed nor impermeable, however, and research often takes place between members of different groups

Current PhD and Master’s students in the Department are researching a wide range of topics. But life in Geography at NUS is not all about work. Our graduate students enjoy a rich and varied social life in one of the most diverse, culturally, and advanced, technologically, cities in the world, at the centre of an extremely dynamic and exciting region. Our graduate students also receive support to enable their participation in international conferences and research networks.

Applicants should hold or in the near future expect to receive a good Honours degree and/or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
